Hat at the ready

girl in yellow victorian dress holding flower basket with her hat in foreground
Hat at the ready at her feet, somebody wanted to be sure to show off this outfit and the very full hairdo. This card is a mystery. There were no markings on it to indicate its sponsor or maker.

Nature studied here! He is carefully explaining. As a proper young Victorian woman, she is being diplomatic, allowing him to show her the world while she sees things from a different angle. Her generation will be the first where women have the right to vote in America.

Stylish Victorian children's beachwear reflected parental emphasis on covering, rather than displaying the body. Swimming while wearing these outfits would be a chore...but they looked good while ashore!

On the reverse of the card, Woolson Spice Co., maker of Lion Coffee, advertised a "premium" available to purchasers of their brand. (Click images to enlarge.)

Carefree outfit for a warm climate. Great for skipping around the block, and maybe even a piano lesson!

Carefree outfit for a warm climate. Great for skipping around the block, and maybe even a piano lesson!

Information and Mahogany piano photo from [ antiquepianoshop.com ] :

"The Poole Piano Company was established by William H. Poole in Boston in 1893. One of Boston’s finest and most respected old names, The Poole Piano Company name was produced for nearly a century. During the early 20th Century, Poole offered several lines of upright pianos, grand pianos and player pianos. In 1917, the firm was incorporated by William Poole’s son, Ava W. Poole.

"Instruments by The Poole Piano Company were exceedingly well made and very expensive. Because of their high cost when new, Poole pianos were not produced in high volume like most other major manufacturers. In the mid-20th Century, the Poole name was absorbed into the giant Aeolian-American Corporation, and Aeolian continued to build the Poole name until the early 1980s."

Children's dress in the early 20th century Samples of international dress were part of the "Art Scrap Book." Our PDF is incomplete, as the customer evidently did not buy enough bread to collect all the illustrations: [ http://bit.ly/BetsyRossBreadScrap ] It does, however, give one a glimpse of a few of the fashions of the time.

Sandusky OH was the center of the original Betsy Ross Bread enterprise, as recorded at [ http://bit.ly/BetsyRossBreadHistory ] According to the Sandusky Library Archives Research Center, "The H and S Modern Baking Company was founded in Sandusky about 1918 by Amandus Smith, Sr. and Edward Hartzel, and continued in operation until the early 1950’s."

Google has lots of images of Betsy Ross Bread. Click on the album below to enlarge pamphlet excerpts and images. For as much of the booklet as we have, click [ http://bit.ly/BetsyRossBreadScrap ]

Height of fashion, 1894! A grape outfit sells grape products. The back of the card makes health claims for Sanitas Grape Food and juice that were most likely exaggerated.

Meanwhile, we found a photo of a Sanitas container as part of a slide presentation by Tobin Gilman [ https://www.slideshare.net/tgilman/book-presentation-11-1613 ]

Tobin Gilman says,

"This presentation was delivered at the New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum on November 16, 2013. It features a subset of content from the award winning book, 19TH CENTURY SAN JOSE IN A BOTTLE, as well as general interest material not included in the book."

Daring exposure for a Victorian woman! While the home piano & organ business has declined, this particular design has maintained its popularity. See comments below for the reverse of the card.
