The Mitchell Inn of Middletown NY and its clock collection no longer exist.

Except here! The Arnold Collection proudly presents a public scan of the complete listing as of 1939. As I remember, the Clock Collection was maintained as a whole by the Middletown Savings Bank after the Mitchell Inn was demolished. As the Bank went through various mergers, however, the Mitchell Inn Clock Collection was eventually dismantled and auctioned off piece by piece to various buyers.

In response to my questions about the post-Mitchell Inn history of the Collection on Facebook's Middletown New York Past and Present Residents group, I received the following helpful responses:

Cheryl Villegas: "I believe you are correct. Some of the clocks went to private citizens from the auction. I also believe that there are some on display at First Federal Savings and Loan on James Street."

Laura Katz: "Yes! I was a great place! I think an antiques dealer from New Paltz bought a number of them..."

Christine Laskaris: "The date of the auction was November 17th,1996 at Mark Vail Auction http://Co.in Pine Bush. Mark Vail's has since been closed."

Mickey Guarino: "A good portion of the clock collection was purchased by John Botti and displayed at "John's Harvest Inn" in Middletown."

I looked at their web site, saw the clocks in photos and was distressed to learn that John's Harvest Inn is, according to Yelp, "permanently closed." I wonder where the clocks will go from there....Did the closing have anything do do with this lawsuit: "Local woman sues 5 businesses over ADA violation claims" (Record newspaper article)

Mickey Guarino "Jeff Diver ...Yes...Apparently there is a legal sting that preys upon businesses that don't have adequate access. It was the better choice to sell out. The clocks are still in His possession."

Tupelo, MIssissippi, 27 December 1891: Birth Notice Born today was one Abe Plough, son of Moses and Julia Isaacs Plough, becoming the youngest of eight children. The family will relocate to Memphis TN next year. There, Abe will begin selling a batch of cottonseed oil, camphor and carbolic acid as "antiseptic oils" door-to-door. In 1908, based on the success of these sales, Moses Plough will loan Abe $125 to start his own business, the Plough Chemical Company. Plough Chemical will become successful enough to purchase the St. Joseph Company in 1920 and begin selling their best-selling aspirin. "According my great-grandfather Louis Theodore Karvystone (1889 – 1971) this movie was produced in 1904 in San Francisco city by Elliot Erwing Dowley…He appearances at running in front of the “train” on the video at 15 year old (6:53 – 6:58). My great grandfather to final filming at the video and talking with the producer, Mister Elliot at 31 years old… In this time, my great grand father sold newspaper on the street… He comes to Brazil in 1919..."

My grandfather, DeForest ("Pat") Diver was an engineer/photographer on the NYO&W. His pictures were accessioned by the Cornell University Library in 1958 and are now online at [ http://bit.ly/DeForestDiverPhotos ]
